Easy Handmade Soap

My daughter went to a birthday party this weekend and one of the activities they did was to make handmade soap. The mom who hosted the party said all the kids loved making their own handmade soap and that it was really easy to make. Easy? Really? The mom explained that she bought a soap base that you just melt and pour into molds. Ah! That I can handle. Dealing with lye, not so much. So here’s the easy melt and pour way to make handmade soap.

Handmade Soap

Here’s What You Need to Make Easy Handmade Soap:

  • Melt and Pour Soap Base (either transparent or white; can be found at craft stores)
  • Glass Measuring Cup
  • Plastic Wrap
  • Food Coloring
  • Soap Mold
  • Fragrance Oil (optional)

Here’s How to Make Easy Handmade Soap:

1. Melt the soap base by placing a piece of it in a glass measuring cup, covering it with plastic wrap, and microwaving it for one minute. Stir until the chunks have dissolved.

2. To color the soap, add food coloring one drop at a time to the melted base until you get the color you want.

3. If you want to add fragrance oil, add .25 ounces per pound of base to the melted soap and stir until the fragrance oil is blended in well.

4. Pour soap mixture into molds and wait a few hours for the soap to be completely cooled before removing it from the soap molds.

The mom at the party put the soap molds in the freezer to hasten the cooling process.

This handmade soap must be easy to make because twelve girls each made soap in less than an hour at a birthday party! If you want more information on how to make handmade soap, this book is a helpful resource.

A couple of years ago I bought some stuff to make soap and it is indeed very easy to do! My question is….a lady (who was also shoopping at the same time)at the store suggested that I make bars of soap and put a picture of my kids in it as gifts for their grandma’s. I loved the idea, but after I got home I couldn’t figure out how to do this without the picture getting ruined and not looking very good, anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Just had a quick question…..I have actually made soap before it is very easy and lots of fun! My question is….while I was at the store about 2 years ago another lady who was shopping told me that she made bars of soap as gifts for the grandma and she put a picture of her kids inside the bars of soap. I thought that sounded like a great idea, but once I got home I wasn’t sure exactly how to do it without ruining the picture and it not looking good inside the soap. Just wondering if anyone else has tried this or have any suggestions on how I might be able to do it!
    Thanks!

I did a little research on how to put photos inside the handmade soap and confirmed the best way is to laminate the photos first. An extra step, but a very cute idea!
