Monday Motivation :: Doing Things We Hate

One of the main reasons I do Monday Motivation is because if I didn’t have some severe consequences in place, I would likely never do some of the things I have to do to keep my business running.

I hate, hate, hate going through all of the emails in my inbox every week. In fact, some Mondays, I avoid it until about 10pm, when I have no choice but to do it, or pay the consequences.

I wish some big reward would pull me up off of my butt to do it, but unless we’re talking some serious cash, rewards just don’t motivate me to action (and it’s hard to give myself cash I don’t already have!). Fear of having to do something I hate even more is enough for me to finally get the crap done. I envy people who are more motivated by rewards. It seems like a lot less stress!

I’m sure you have something you HATE to do as well. Today I challenge you to do one thing you hate today. But don’t lay it on too thick, because too much dread in a day is a bad thing. ;)

So here’s the Monday Motivation drill:

Step 1 - let us know what you are going to get done today (your to-do list, so to speak).

Step 2 - put it in a comment below or a post on your own site.

Step 3 - let us know what will motivate you to get it done - a reward, consequences, or whatever you need to think that will ensure you do what you say you are going to do. I’ve found that the public announcement and accountability is a particularly great motivator, but throw down consequences if you really need a kick in the pants to get stuff done!

Today before I go to sleep I will

  • Get through 263 emails
  • Have kids clean 2 rooms
  • Get W9’s out to three affiliate networks so I can get paid
  • Finish my new Press Room page
  • 2 blog posts

If I don’t get this done by the time I said I would I will  go without coffee for a week.

So what are you going to get done today?!

To motivate myself…I thought long and hard about this one so this is what I came up with :

If I fail to complete all three then I have to go 2 days without my cell phone…yikes!

I am going into 2 weeks of holiday mayhem, today was the staging day for it all to go accordingly - I wore 6 hats, ate at my desk and stayed in my PJ’s. With the day behind me I thank myself for planning monday’s as my planning day because my weekends would other wise be a blur of more of the same.

I had an awesome relaxing weekend

I am avoiding a hateful desk pile project and sales taxes

so if that’s done by the end of the week … I’ll treat myself to a long walk - about the best I can do on a dime

What a good call, Monday’s are such a pain. I’m going to get the following done all during the same hour if I can:

    Buy x-mas presents.
    Do the laundry.
    Conduct an interview.

After I’m done I’m going to treat myself to a Sunday. If I fail to complete them I’m going to give up desert for a week.

Hmmm… I think I am going to put it off another day ;)

Actually, I am not going to allow myself to work other business projects until I work on it.
