Freelance Advice from the Blogosphere, Part 2

When we started our business, Tamara and I set up a Gmail account for business-related emails.  My husband is a computer geek, so he was very excited to send us an invitation and teach me all about the Wonderful World of Google.  One of the applications he showed me has become sort of a daily joy to use – Google Reader.  I have a Technorati account with about 70 favorites in a wide range of categories, but I reserved the Google Reader only for freelance-related blogs.

It has been so much fun!

Here are some of the best posts that have been fed into my Reader in the last week or so:

  • Mary Beth at Freelance Switch wrote this awesome piece on how freelancing isn’t always seen as a “job.”  It’s called “Mixed Marriages:  When One Spouse Goes Freelance.”  Like I said in my comment to her, I really dig her writing style.  I’ll be following her over to her other blog next week.

  • I’m getting a little addicted to Freelance Folder.  There was a really useful article for freelancers called “3 Things Your Customers Won’t Tell You Unless You Ask” posted by Dave Navarro a couple of weeks ago.  It’s a good reminder that we need to follow up with our clients on more than just getting the check.

  • Chris Garrett at Freelance Folder also had some great advice to share in his piece called “My Top Five Biggest Freelancing Mistakes.”  Whether you’re new to freelancing or an old pro, you probably recognize just what Chris is talking about!

  • To add sort of a follow up to Chris’ post above, you might want to check out Anne’s article “No Is a Complete Sentence” over at The Golden Pencil.

  • Success from the Nest is an interesting little blog that offers insights into the freelancing world.  Tony’s post “The Only Time You Can Start Is Now” is right up my alley and is sort of one of my personal guiding principles.  He explains that sitting around wishing you’d done something doesn’t get you any closer to actually doing it.  I think this advice applies to life just as much as it does to a career.
