About Freelance Parent

Just like our business, this blog is a collaborative effort between Lorna Doone Brewer and Tamara Berry. The two of us have been coworkers in the past, and we always really admired each other’s writing. After some job upheaval, we decided it was time to strike out on our own by creating a freelance writing company.

We started the Berry-Brewer Agency in August of 2007, and every single day since then has been an adventure.

Some of the adventures have been incredibly rewarding, like discovering we beat our first month’s financial goal. Some have been disappointing, like realizing that we’d actually fall short of that goal because a client stiffed us. Some have been down-right unbelievable, like getting our husbands on board with our hair-brained schemes! So far we’ve been able to keep a good sense of humor and the requisite amount of enthusiasm to continue moving forward.

While our personal focus is on freelance writing, we want all types of freelancers to feel comfortable here. If you’re making your living (or aspire to make your living) by offering other services on a freelance basis, we definitely want to hear from you, too.

Join us as we blog our way through the ups and downs of starting a freelance service business. Our hope is that this will be a place that other freelancers can turn to for ideas and encouragement. You’re welcome to follow right along with us through this learning process. In fact, we suspect that we’ll get as much (or more) from you as you do from us.

Lorna Doone Brewer has been writing stories for as long as she can remember. Somewhere she has a book that contains the original, hand-written manuscript for “The Clown that Wanted to Be a Cat.” Eschewing the obvious fame and fortune this story could have brought, six-year-old Lorna Doone instead dedicated it to her mother and moved on to the third grade.

Nearly three decades later, Lorna Doone is still writing, although fiction often takes a back seat to the gigs that pay. She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, two very content cats and a couple of conniving goldfish (“We’re soooo hungry!” they lie to anyone who will pay attention); and she maintains the Something Good blog. She is expecting her first child in January, and life is currently in that precariously beautiful stage between morning sickness and being too big to climb the stairs.

Tamara Berry is the mother of a two-year-old daughter. Ever since this beautiful little girl came into her life, she has been trying to strike a balance between her career and her motherhood. It hasn’t always been an easy road and has ranged from working part time to working full time – and now to working entirely from home. It has been a journey filled with bumps, potholes, and missing bridges!

Tamara is still reeling from the realization that she can make a living from her words. Although writing has always been a part of her life, both professionally and personally, this is her first time depending 100% on writing as a means of livelihood.
