Excessive Snowfall, Closed Schools, and the Joys of Freelancing

We live in Spokane, WA. For those of you who don’t know where we are, we are on the eastern side of the state of Washington — on the other side of the mountains and about as far away from Seattle as you can get. We usually get plenty of snow during the winter.

But rarely do we get this much.

I don’t know the official tally, but I’d say the snow about two feet deep at this point (and still snowing). My cars are stuck, the roads are awful, and all the schools are closed for the second day in a row.

I’d like to take a moment to praise the world of freelancing. Inclement weather and this profession go hand-in-hand.

• There is no last-minute struggle to find a place to stick your school-less children.
• There are no bosses to haggle with regarding your (in)ability to sacrifice your safety for your job by hitting the dangerous roads.
• You can hole up in your house for days without letting any of your professional responsibilities slide.
• You might actually become more productive, because there is nowhere for you to go other than your own four walls.

I hear ya. When we had the big snowstorm a month back up here in Quebec, it hit thigh high snow in 24 hours. We’re Canadians, but even we were scratching our heads over that much snow!

ohh yeah! In Michigan we’re expecting a possible snow day on Wednesday, and instead of fighting with hubby over whose turn it is to call in and piss off a boss, I just shrug and say “So What? Bring it on!”

As a work-at-home-mom in Canada, I really understand what you are saying. We got about 150cm of snow in a week just before Christmas. Schools were closed, yet I did not miss work. No worries over what to do with the children, and no fights with hubby. Life for us went on as normal, completely making up for the tough days when it’s not so great to be self-employed.

@ Loralea - I think you’re like… an hour away from me. Where are you located in Ontario? (And yep, we had the same snow, only more than you, I think. Business as usual lol)
