Amanda says” After I had my online shop set up to accept orders, and my business cards all printed, I made custom bags and hats for all of my friends and family at cost, but not for free. They get free goodies as gifts for special occasions all the time and I didn’t want to lose a ton of money with this advertising strategy by giving my product away. They were all more than willing to pay a very discounted price for a custom bag and this showed them I was serious about starting this business. They were thrilled to have a way to support me. This has provided me with a ton of free advertising. Since my friends and family are so supportive of my business, and grateful for the yummy loot, they tend to be very enthusiastic salespeople (who are well stocked with business cards at all times). They also provide me with great feedback on my designs and fabric choices once they’ve had a chance to ‘test drive’ them. The cost of this advertising is only my time (which is valuable, But I still consider this a bargain) since they purchase the bags at the cost of materials. I figure my bags are seen in Thousands of places I might never have gone, or thought to advertise in, this way. For example, I have a very good friend who works for the State Legislature. She is around very well dressed, corporate ladies all day, every day. She carries one of my bags at work and out on business lunches daily. I have received 7 orders (that I know of) as a result of this and she has only had her bag for a couple months. Another great way to advertise is to donate a bag to a charity auction where it will be exposed to hundreds of people”
Thanks for that Amanda! What brilliant marketing ideas and great advice. Word of mouth is so useful, and it really helps to see your products being modeled. Best of luck with your shop.

That’s a great story on how you got seven orders just from one woman carrying your bag! How very ingenious of you . . .
I really should build spine and do that. I still have my “aww, shucks, my friends are looking at my items” moments.
