I think it’s safe to say I’m pretty dang good at getting motivated and helping other people to feel motivated. I have to admit to you, though, that being super-disciplined is NOT one of my strengths, and I have to work at it - a lot. I’ll even go so far to say that I am not so good at working at it sometimes… because it takes discipline to work at things. Funny how that works. Not.
But when I go too long without being able to keep myself disciplined with my work, I start taking more drastic measures to get myself back on track. In the last few weeks, I have been eating better, drinking tea instead of coffee, taking vitamins, doing creative projects, and getting out of the house more often. But when these things weren’t bringing me back to my normal level of focus, I knew I had to bring out the big guns.
I hired a business coach. And not just any coach, she’s also been one of my best friends for over 8 years. I can’t bull$hit this woman, and she and I both know it. She has also helped 5 women grow their businesses to over $1 million dollars in revenue. So I get the best of both worlds, a shoulder to cry on and a tough business-savvy entrepreneur-wrangler.
You’ll hear more and more about our work together, but for now, it means I have my nose to the grindstone and it’s not exactly pretty. I’m fine at creating my own motivation - it’s the discipline I need a little help with.
So today I’m going to do two lists - today’s list and this week’s list. Hope you’re willing to get things done with me this week!
Today before I go to sleep I will:
- Empty out my inbox
- Install two programs on this computer
- Do three loads of laundry
- Clean my office that the kids trashed this weekend
- Post two more articles to this blog and my Inspired blog
By the end of the day Friday I will:
- Have new theme mocked up
- Buy ticket for SXSW (unless for some weird reason I decide to drive)
- Work 1 more hour on my business projections
- Work at Starbucks at least one morning
- Email two old colleagues from Socrates.com
- Create new vision board
- Meditate 3 times
Leverage :: If I don’t have all this done by the time I say I will, I will donate an additional $250 to a Kiva entrepreneur (or 10 Kiva entrepreneurs if they still have that annoying $25 limit going on!).
So what are you going to get done today, tomorrow, or this week?

Certainly, answering to someone in an authority position helps get stuff done when you can’t find a way to conjure up self motivation, even when the person you’re answering to is someone you’ve hired.

Oh man, I am so busy today. Here are my goals:
* Read 50 blogs in 15 minutes
* Take notes
* Do book research (Already spent 2 hours on this — more needed — Gak!)
* Clean (D***!)
* Grocery shopping
* Probably more, but I’m going to ignore it until later — maybe it will magically do itself?
This week: change sheets, do laundry, wash bathroom and work on my book.
This is a lot to do, but I know the reward and satisfaction is worth it. That’s what motivates me.

Wendy, Wendy, Wendy….Every Monday I try to forget about the e-mails piling up, the laundry that needs to be done and the kids that need to be fed but then I come here and, darn it, there you are…whispering in my ear. LOL
My goals for the day:
1. Finish prettying up our new adoption forums
2. Read the ProBlogger post that I saved
3. Watch the movie I rented last week from Blockbuster
4. Feed the kids (lol)
PS: I’d love to see that vision board when it’s done!

Well, I just cleaned the lving room and it took over an hour. The rest of this week, I need to do one room a day. *gulp*
On top of that, I have to:
- finish up with two clients
- rearrange the office
- make those phone calls I keep putting off
- prep for friday’s job
- finish answering emails (I cleaned up inboxes yesterday, go me!)
- work on client #3 on an easy job that is going so slow for me (talk about needing motivation!)
- organize my notebook and get back to using it
- ponder the paid support forum idea
Gee, I need one of those business coaches becasue that’s just a brief and selective list. Normally I use the hubby, but I get too mad at him when he has a good point.
(waves to Joanne above me)

I relate so closely to what you are saying Wendy.
It’s the self discipline that is so necessary, one of my failings- maybe a need a tough coach too
Today I will finish my weekly plan that didn’t quite get done yesterday.

If I don’t get this done, I won’t to Yoga tonight
I’m going to pass on this one and make Tuesday my day of motivation this week. This is partly because I was working on the weekend. What I want to do most this week is to develop a concept that will be the source of some good content.

I’m glad that you found value in hiring a business coach. More and more CEOs and highly successful people are definitely realizing that this is not just a trend, it’s part of doing business the RIGHT way. As a business coach specifically for teachers who are ready to start a part-time or seasonal biz, I guess I have some bias. However, there’s no doubt that your productivity has since soared, and you’ll see a high ROI!
