eSelfHelp Lives On in the ExperienceProject

Many of you know that the reason this blog got started is because I was going to start a self help website with a social networking component at eSelfHelp.com. My ‘grand vision’ was to connect people who had ‘been there - done that’ with other people who shared those same experiences, or were looking for help while they were in the midst of the experience now.

Well thanks to the magic of StumbleUpon, I was thrilled to see today that someone else got this great idea and brought it to fruition - and did a better job than I would have. ;) I’m super-psyched to see it come to life, and they creepily started about the same time I did - perhaps there’s something to be said about Jung’s Collective Unconscious after all?!

So I wanted to give a shout out to the folks over at The Experience Project, and I think many of you will find the site fascinating and addicting, like I have. :D

From the site:

Experience Project is a new networking community that connects you to others through shared life experiences and beliefs. You can be as anonymous or public as you like– get to know your friends better, and make new ones that understand the real you! You’ll find incredible support and friendship inside.

Fame, Being Uncomfortable, Friendship and THE Lorelle

Yesterday, I drove several hours in rainy rush hour traffic to go hang out with The Lorelle for a bit before she went back home to Oregon. We joked and laughed about blogging fame and fortune (and the lack thereof for many a month as a new blogger), shared personal stories of overcoming our own self-imposed limitations and self-sabotage in the past, and got to chatting about new projects in the future that we might consider working on with each other.

On the way home, the enormity of the SOBCon experience hit me. And I was extremely UNcomfortable.

I don’t know what it was about talking with Lorelle - something about the fact that I was sitting and having coffee with THE Lorelle, the prospect of working with her, or the fact that she made the comment that she thought I was on the road to fame or what… but I left feeling a bit scared and like I was walking around in shoes WAY too big for my tiny feet to handle.

It’s even weird to blog this, because I don’t want to sound conceited, and I feel like I shouldn’t make a big deal about this kind of stuff. I should take my own dang advice and put one foot in front of the other and just focus on the next task on my list.

Instead, I realize that at SOBCon I hit a point of no return. My name is now out there as an inspirational speaker and leader. And I did it in front of 110+ people, not just from my comfy little home office in my favorite room in the house. I’m living my mission and suddenly it became very clear to me that taking the easy way out or turning back is not an option anymore. That’s flipping scary (and since this is a PG-13 blog, I’ll just let you know that I really mean the other F word in that sentence).

Was it an option before? Probably not. But now it seems so much more real than it did before last weekend.

You know what? Living and working your mission is a wonderfully exciting and enthralling way to live. But at times, it really feels quite literally like I have 20 hands pulling my heart in all directions in order to make it bigger. I’m not complaining, because I am 100% grateful to be feeling this way.

It’s been a long, long time since I’ve questioned publishing a post. But if I am to live what I just told 110 people to live, then I had better damn well get over myself and get on with this. ;)

So why am I publishing this post?

The biggest reason is because I want you to know that when you are successful, you aren’t going to suddenly sit back and feel confident 100% of the time. Sometimes, you won’t feel like you know what the hell you are doing. Sometimes, you will wonder how the hell you will handle it all.

So, if you’re waiting until you feel totally capable and confident before you go for your dreams, you’ll never get there. Go now, and jump off the cliff while you know you have no wings on your back.

You’ll just have to trust that you will grow those wings on the way down.

SOBCon Leaves Me Speechless

I’ve read through so many SOBCon posts over the last couple of days, and I’ve been quite frankly a little nervous about this moment - it’s time for me to write a post about the conference. And guess what?

I don’t know what to say.

It’s not like I’m usually at a loss for words, as many of you know! The event was a connection on a deeper level with old friends met for the first time. Dare I say magical without sounding like a total hippie?!

I tried to sneak in late on Friday night, which was an absolute joke, because the minute I walked in the room, I was greeted with a giant bear hug from close friend Dawud Miracle. Then once the hugs started, they just couldn’t stop, and somehow I was running around the room hugging everyone as I couldn’t wait to wrap my arms around all these people who mean SO much to me.

The first hugging victims:

Lorelle VanFossen, Adam Kayce, Easton Ellsworth , Ben Yoskovitz, Robyn Tippins, Liz Strauss, Phil Gerbyshak, Tony Clark (the best surprise because I didn’t know he was going to be there!!), Alex Shalman, Sharon Scherer, Kammie Kobyleski , Ari Garber, Mike Sansone, Chris and Lisa Cree, Terry Starbucker, Muhammad Saleem, and Sheila Scarborough.

The next day, the presentations were just amazing - they far exceeded my expectations. I know a LOT about blogging, but to have an open discussion in person really put a whole new perspective on things. Jason Alba live blogged the whole event - so I steer you to him for the dirt on the presentations.

At the end of the night I really didn’t want to leave. We were with our “online family” that we finally got to spend some quality time with - and now I’m sad everyone is back home. :(

I think I hugged almost every single person there. And if I didn’t, I wish I did!! But here is a virtual hug to all of the rest of the people I haven’t already mentioned:

Sandra Renshaw, Brad Shorr, Timothy Johnson, Tammy Lenski, David Dalka, Todd And John Yedinak, Tim Draayer, Jeremy Geelan, Carolyn Manning, Sheila Scarborough, Steve Farber, Doug Mitchell, Jeff O’Hara, Dave Schoof, Jamy Shiels, Adam Steen, Hannah Steen, Chris Thilk, Barry Zweibel, Eric Bingen, Ellen Moore, Cord Silverstein, Jean-Patrick Smith, James Walton, Sharan Tash, Vernon Lun, Tony Lee, Scott Desgrosseilliers, Mark Murrell, Mark Goodyear, Ann Michael, Kent Blumberg, Ashley Cecil, Robert Hruzek, Sabu N G, Lisa Gates, Franke James, Chris Brown, Troy Worman, Karen Putz, Jesse Petersen, Terry Mapes, Andy Brudtkuhl, Lucia Mancuso, Peter Flaschner, Derrick Sorles, Mike Rohde, Thomas Clifford, Rajesh Srivastava, Claire Celsi, Cristiana Passinato, Sean R., Brad Spirrison, Ari Garber, Dr. Rob Wolcott, Cheryll Cruz, Sharon Scherer, Jonathan Phillips Jason Wade, Jill Pullen, Doug Bulleit, Wendy Kinney, Chelsea Vincent, Ayush Agarwal, Paul Mangalik, Premchand Kallan, Xochi Kaplan , Michael Snell, and Ella Wilson.

And to my wonderful co-presenters who made the day amazing:

Andy Sernovitz Phil Gerbyshak Liz Strauss David Armano Mike Sansone Drew McLellan Mike Wagner Terry Starbucker Rodney Rumford Ben Yoskovitz Chris Cree Robyn Tippins Diego Orjuela Vernon Lun and Christine Kane

Monday Motivation :: Let’s Make This Motivation Week!

Monday MotivationWelcome to Monday Motivation everyone - the kick start to the week fueled by my desperate need for focus my desire to help everyone get a productive start to their week! ;)

I’ll be honest with you - these last few weeks have been extremely busy as I have launched the two new blogs and prepared for SOBCon - and some really important things have been blown off.

So let’s instead make this Motivation Week.

However you want to play along, please do - let’s just make this the most productive week of all time, shall we?

The premise of Monday Motivation is simple - tell everyone (on your blog or in a comment below) what you plan on getting done. Then let us know what is your motivation for getting it done.
For me, the public announcement usually is enough accountability. But for long to-do lists, I like to throw in a little leverage - consequences - if I don’t get my stuff done. Some people prefer to give themselves a reward - whatever works for you, works for Monday Motivation!

But since I’m behind, I challenge myself and all of you to be motivated and productive from now through Friday.

I’ll throw down a big list, with big consequences. If I can do it, you can too!

Monday

  • Create ultimate to do list of All Things Procrastinated
  • Do 20 minutes of self-coaching (I’m feeling guilty for procrastinating and that is taking up too much of my energy!!)
  • Write three blog posts
  • Clean out inbox [”only” 213 items this week!]
  • Get plans set to meet up with my new best buddy Lorelle of Wordpress fame while she is still in town

Tuesday

  • Hopefully meet up with Lorelle if we can make it work
  • 3 things off of my All Things Procrastinated list
  • Write three blog posts

Wednesday

  • Spend one hour gathering and organizing tax records
  • 3 things off of my All Things Procrastinated list
  • Write two blog posts

Thursday

  • Figure out how to post the video of my SOBCon presentation and spend an hour on editing and cleaning up the footage (or on learning how to do that!!)
  • 3 things off of my All Things Procrastinated list
  • Write three blog posts

Friday

  • Go to my first-grader’s school picnic lunch
  • 3 things off of my All Things Procrastinated list
  • Write three blog posts

By the end of the week I will also have the following done [note I am committing to balance this week, too!]:

  • Meditate three times
  • Walk to school at least two times
  • 1 date night with my awesome hubby

If I don’t have all of this done by the time I go to bed on Saturday night, I will PayPal $50 to 5 random regular readers.

So, what are you going to get done this week?! :D

I Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Regrets!

ShoeMoney tagged me with a meme the other day as he asks me and David Dellanave, Greg Hartnett, Danny Sullivan, and Neil Patel a pretty personal question :: What do we wish we had been more serious about in life?

To be honest with you, I don’t think I can come close to the wisdom and inspiration that Jeremy shared in his own post. Did you know that the rich and famous ShoeMoney himself used to weigh 240 pounds more than he does right now, was a quarter of a million dollars in debt and once never had any intentions of making more than $25K a year?

Yeah, neither did I! But I think this is why he and I clicked so much at Elite Retreat, because we have a lot in common (although he really has me beat on several fronts).

So what do I wish I had been more serious about in life?

Quite honestly, it’s hard to regret any of my mistakes anymore - because I’m pretty dang happy with where I am today. But if I could go back in time keeping the lessons while losing some of the pain, here’s what I would have done differently:

Self Respect

I used to really hate myself - I mean, I would just sit there and detest every cell in my body. I hate even thinking about it now, because there’s a night and day difference. back then, I would do just about anything to get love and approval from anyone else. I was needy, I took on other people’s opinions rather than forming my own, and I ignored my own inner wisdom if I thought it meant someone else would think I was worthy. I dated loser guys, if I dated at all. The guy I was dating when I was 25 was such a drug-using moron that we broke up when I was 4 months pregnant with his child. I spent the next few years single and I’ve never collected a cent of child support.

The good part of that story is that it was just the wakeup call I needed to start taking care of myself - which I have done since I became a mom. :D So I wish I would have learned this lesson a lot earlier in life - because living like that was excruciating.

Ambition

Two years after graduating from college I was a waitress. I had a degree in Psychology, yet I was waiting tables for a living. Flash forward to today, and I know hundreds, if not thousands of people who are two years out of college and already are more successful than I am. A Mr. Kevin Rose comes to mind. If I had just an ounce of the ambition that I have now back then, we probably wouldn’t be having this conversation - and Tony Robbins would be introducing ME at my next speaking event! ;)

Domain Name Choices

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If I had ANY idea as to how this blog would have evolved, I NEVER would have chosen the URL eMomsatHome.com. Only half of you are women, and less than that are moms. I still get emails from people saying, “Wow - love your site! I came across it before but since I’m not a mom, I didn’t stick around!”

GAH.

I tag Kris Jones, Liz Strauss, Ben Yoskovitch, Tony Clark and Jennifer Laycock. Yeah, this should be good.

How to Plan a Successful Advertising Campaign

Many bloggers and online entrepreneurs seek to GET advertisers for their site. But advertisers aren’t interested in your site unless you yourself have compelling traffic numbers.

Ways to boost your site traffic numbers include using social networking, social bookmarking sites, contests, SEO and viral marketing campaigns. Advertising gets less attention because there is usually a smaller ROI (Return on Investment). But even the smallest of websites can find ways to advertise effectively and on a super-tiny budget.

The key is to plan effectively. There are plenty of free advertising opportunities out there - but if you don’t have a plan behind the campaign, you can waste your time and everyone else’s, too.

Step 1 :: Define Your Target Market

Who wants your product or service? What’s their age, gender, nationality, income level, and general interests? If you’re just starting out, make some guesses. As a company or site evolves, different target markets will emerge, and sometimes surprise you.

You can find out quite a bit about your target audience by analyzing site traffic origins, search engine keyphrases, polling current customers/site visitors, and by examining your competition very closely.
Here’s my target audience for eMoms at Home:

Work at home parents (40%+ are males - to my surprise!)
Age 30 - 50

Primary residence in US (according to Alexa and Google Analytics)

Household Income level >75K

Primary interests (while they are on this site): Business, Entrepreneurship, Online Marketing, and Work-Life Balance
Secondary Interests (in general): Personal Development, Parenting, Communication and Shopping

Step 2 :: Understand Your Target Market

This is where my background in psychology has helped me tremendously in business. What motivates your target audience? What do they care about? What does their generation value?

Put yourself into their shoes. Create a profile of the person that you think would be your ideal customer. Even better, if you know some people in this demographic, call them up and ask them a few questions - especially if you don’t know a lot about what is important to them.

The Pew Internet & American Life Project also publishes free reports about the way people interact with each other and businesses online.

Step 3 :: Research Your Competition

Your established competition has likely made some mistakes along the way. You can learn from them and skip the mistake part - study your competition carefully. Who is linking to them? Where are they advertising? Are they doing any offline promotion? Have they changed their approach over the years, and if so, how?
Call them up and ask for a quote if they are a service business. Google your top keywords to see who is on the first page of results. You could even find a ‘complimentary’ competitor to interview (someone who targets the same audience, yet sells something different than your business).

Also, look for sites in your niche that have a SiteMeter button like this: SiteMeter Some sites actually leave their traffic stats open to the public - which is a peek into way more information than they should be giving you about their company!

Step 4 :: Brainstorm Ideas

Get creative and keep your end goal in mind. You want people to come to you or your site who will be the most likely person to become a repeat visitor/customer/client. The higher the quality of the referring source, the better the possibility this person will turn into just that. Things to consider:

From a technical perspective: Alexa rank, Google Page Rank, Technorati Rank, mailing and RSS subscriber lists.

From a branding perspective: Reputation, relevance, location, authority, context.

Do a little homework:

Do you want to create a banner ad or text link campaign?

Do you want to tap the power of search engines? They may require a small learning curve, but they also have the ability to send you the most targeted traffic of all.

Is your business local, and are there ways you can advertise both offline and online?

What barter options are out there in your niche?

Step 5 :: Pick Your Best Advertising Ideas and Just Do It!

In the end, there is nothing that I can say that will predict the best advertising path to take. When I went to Elite Retreat, I was surprised that even the most experienced marketers on the planet always created several campaigns to TEST which one got the best results.

Regardless, your site or business will pick up more visitors and build brand awareness - which is critical to your long-term success. And if your site/blog is your business, investing time and/or money into advertising your site will do that, and make you more attractive to other advertisers. Search Engine Guide advertises on this blog - yet sells their own advertising on their site. The investment they make in building traffic creates more value for their own sponsors.

Remember - there is no failure, only feedback. :D

For some free and cheap ways to kick off an advertising campaign, read today’s Entrepreneur.com post Ten Free Advertising Opportunities for Your Business.

Interested in Some Great Domain Names?

I don’t know if you are like me - every time I come up with a brilliant business or marketing idea, I run out and grab a domain name for it - then those dang domain names sit there and do nothing while I work on all of my other gazillions of projects! ;)

I’ve decided to let go of some of these domain names, they are all up for auction at Sedo.com:

eGreatOutdoors.com

eMarketingCareers.com

NewbieBlogging.com

FashionSho.ws

AND eSelfHelp.com
(I know, I know, this one is hard to let go of!!)

I’m hoping that at least some of them get top dollar at auction, but if any of you regular readers are interested, let me know and we can cut a deal. ;)

Also, if you want to buy domain names at a discount, eMoms readers can use this coupon code for $2.00 off each purchase at GoDaddy: cjc695dom.

Blogging Beyond the Blogosphere :: SOBCon 2007

SOBCon is finally here this weekend! I and many others have been looking forward to this event for months!

My presentation is going to be based on the March post Are You a Member of the Blogging In-Crowd?

The post raised a great debate - are we blogging just for bloggers? Most bloggers started their blogs to get a message out - but are we failing ourselves and our potential readers when we spend so much time focused on getting links and attention from other bloggers?

The real question behind all of this is :: What can we do to break outside of the blogosphere and reach the people we wanted to reach with our message in the first place?

I bring this up now, because I would be curious to know what you would like to get out of this presentation. Although it’s close to finalized, it wouldn’t be a SOBCon presentation without this being a conversational presentation, would it?

If this presentation could alter the course of your blogging career forever, what would you have to get out of it?

If you were to walk away from my presentation knowing full well that you got tremendous value from it, what questions would you want answered?

Or better yet, what questions would you want raised? ;)
