Blogging Elite Retreat :: Lee Dodd

Lee Dodd rocks!I have to say that I had been looking forward the MOST to these last two presentations by Lee Dodd and Kris Jones. Lee really has a WOW factor going, he’s so dang knowledgeable and savvy with this stuff - it’s almost intimidating. :)

Lee has made his mark with building, buying and selling forums. I had come across his Earner’s Forum quite a while ago, and have spent not nearly enough time over there (that will change). He’s also amazingly talented at flipping sites (as in, like Flip This House). This kind of stuff is probably a bit out of the league of the readers here, so I’ll focus more on the stuff that I most wanted to learn about :: building and monetizing communities.

The bad news? Monetizing blog communities is not nearly effective as with forum communities. And moving a blog community into a forum environment really hasn’t been successfully done on a large scale as of yet.

The good news? That doesn’t mean you can’t build and make a ton of money off of a forum-driven community site. And I have a ton of ideas and resources now on how to do just that.

Ironically enough, a lot of the things Lee wanted to cover on this topic are already out there on his site. He’s got a whole series of posts on his blog on how to start a successful online community. It will be one of the FIRST things I dive into when I’m back home.

Lee also dispelled one of the myths about running a forum - you don’t need to spend a lot of time on it to be successful. This was a huge idea that had been holding me back from getting one started, and with his launch strategies, I now understand how to build it to run by itself.

This was one of my BIGGEST goals for Elite Retreat - to find a way to put some systems into place that will generate revenue with a small ongoing time investment. And between this and what I plan on learning from Kris on affiliate marketing, I’ll be doing just that. :D
I know I say that Kris is blogging this too every time - but I must insist that you really go read through every one of his Elite Retreat posts. He’s literally taking notes on the fly, so he’s offering up a whole different perspective on what’s going on over here.

Wendy, I am going to have to be honest, I expected more from the Lee Dodd write up. You didn’t really give us anything. The link over to Kris was helpful though, he got us covered on this one. I guess sometimes you have to LISTEN instead of WRITE during a seminar.

I personally write some of my comments here while in Cell Biology class during easy slides. Perhaps not the best strategy ;)

Lee is a cool guy, and great when it comes to “flipping” communities online. I hope you wrote everything down so much going on it was hard for me to keep up at my first one as i am horrible note taker.

Great article, Wendy. I am actually a member of one or two of Lee’s communities (also one or two of previous forums before he sold them on) and I must say that what he does with ‘flipping’ communities is absolutely incredible and very inspiring. Great work, Lee! :)

    Wendy,

I’d love to hear more about Lee’s take on the amount of time that it takes to run a forum.

I have considered it many times, and I’ve actually already built one for my site, but I am really nervous about turning it on because of the potential time constraints.

    Any thoughts on that?

Aaron, you won’t know until you try, will you? I recommend the set-it and forget-it approach =)
