Coloring Easter eggs is one of those Easter activities I did growing up that I now do with my kids. We have to do it every Easter, it’s tradition! How we go about actually coloring the Easter eggs though has varied from year to year. Not only have we colored Easter eggs the traditional way, we’ve colored them with markers, glitter and stickers too! However, coloring Easter eggs the traditional way has resulted in our most vivid designs!
Here’s What You Need to Color Easter Eggs the Traditional Way:
- Eggs
- Food coloring
- Vinegar
- Plastic bowls or cups
- Plastic spoons
- Plastic tablecloth or newspaper
- Egg carton
- Crayons, rubber bands, glitter, stickers, markers (optional)
Here’s How to Color Easter Eggs the Traditional Way:
1. Hard boil the eggs and let them cool.
(I recommend placing the eggs in a large saucepan then adding just enough cold water to cover the eggs. Bring the water to a gentle boil then reduce the heat so the eggs simmer in the water for 8-10 minutes. Then remove the saucepan from the burner and add cold water to it so the eggs cool completely.)
2. Cover the counter or table with a plastic tablecloth or newspapers.
3. Mix 1 Tablespoon of food coloring with 2 teaspoons of vinegar in a small plastic bowl or cup. Then fill the bowl or cup half way with cold water. Repeat this step for as many colors as you want to use.
3. Use a plastic spoon to carefully lower an egg into one of the containers of food coloring. The longer the egg stays in the food coloring, the darker the color will be.
(Some eggs we dye just one color, while others we dip in two or more colors. We also create different designs on the Easter eggs by drawing on the eggs with crayons or by wrapping rubber bands around them before dipping them in the food coloring. This works because the dye doesn’t go where the crayon markings or rubber bands are. )
4. Scoop the egg out of the food coloring and place it in the empty egg carton to dry.
5. Once the eggs are dry, you can also decorate them with markers, glitter or stickers.
Coloring Easter eggs is not only fun, but a timeless Easter tradition!
